We talked up some spice facts from McCormick.com this morning on the G 101-3 Morning Show. Check it out...

Each of us eats an average of 3.3 pounds of spices a year (not including salt). Most of it is black pepper and mustard seed that we consume in prepared mustard. Mustard contains lots of protective substances called phytochemicals, which may inhibit the growth of existing cancer cells and help prevent normal cells from turning into cancerous ones. Here are some other spices you may want to try:

• Turmeric. This may be a wonder spice. It has been used in Indian and Chinese medicine for centuries. Preliminary research shows it can improve digestion and may reduce your risk of heart attack. It also appears to have strong anti-cancer properties and may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

• Cinammon has the highest antioxidant level of any spice. It also has a compound that helps regulate blood sugar.

• Oregano also has a very high level of cancer-fighting antioxidants.

• Red Pepper has been shown to reduce hunger and increase metabolism.

• Thyme. Research indicates it can help brain function and promote heart health.
