Is a debt consolidation loan a good idea?

My wife and I are currently drowning in credit card and medical expenses debt. Over the years I have tried to pay this off in different ways but with no luck. I wanted to know if getting a debt consolidation personal loan is the way to go here? I have been hesitant in the past but at this point I just want to handle this with a single payment which I feel would be easier to handle. Any advice or your own past experiences would be great.
